General Questions

  1. Who selects the candidates?
    The candidates are selected over a period of several months. A jury consisting of representatives from the Fulbright Commission, the United States Embassy and people outside of the Commission, and of experts in each discipline (generally former Fulbright grantees) selects the candidates.


  2. What other institutions or organizations offer financial assistance?
    See attached document


  3. What are the main criteria used to select Fulbright grantees?
    Fulbright grantees are selected on the basis of their academic achievement, previous work experience, and their potential for leadership in a wide range of disciplines.


  4. I am going to participate in a seminar/ conference/ course in the United States. Does the Fulbright Commission offer financial assistance for this? What type of financial assistance does the Commission offer?
    The Fulbright Commission’s financial assistance is limited to the programs described on our web page. Financial assistance is not offered for:
    • seminars/ conferences/ courses in the United States
    • airplane tickets
    • English study in the United States
    • financing for local NGOs or for research projects in Argentine institutions
    • athletic scholarships
    • scholarships for countries other than the United States
    • undergraduate studies


  5. Are grants offered to complete a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA)? No.


  6. Are grants offered to complete graduate studies in translation or interpretation?
    No.


  7. I want to do in an internship in the United States; can the Fulbright Commission help me?
    You can consult the internship reference guides available in the Fulbright Commission’s library.

  8. What kind of information can I find in the Fulbright Commission’s library?
    The library contains catalogs of U.S. universities and reference guides for different areas of studies.


  9. Can I participate in the grant competition if my score on the TOEFL exam is lower than the required score?
    No.


  10. If I have lived in the United States, should I still complete an English placement test?
    Yes.

  11. Where can prepare for the TOEFL exam?
    You can contact Argentina’s Bi-national Centers (for example, ICANA in Buenos Aires).

  12. Where can I buy material to help me prepare for the TOEFL exam?
    You can go to the webpage www.toefl.org and look at the materials available for sale. You can also consult the bi-national centers.

  13. Does the Fulbright Commission sell or loan materials that will help me to prepare for the TOEFL exam?
    No.

  14. Can the Fulbright Commission help me obtain a United States visa?

Master’s Program >>Top

  1. Is there an age limit to apply for this grant program?
    The age limit is 38.

  2. How do I turn in the application?
    As of 2007, Fulbright has an online submission process for the Master’s Program. Please go to our homepage and follow the instructions for signing in and filling out your application form. Applicants will also be asked to submit paper copies of their application.
  3. Are the two years of work experience after graduation mandatory?
    They are highly recommended and the candidates with two years of work experience after completing their bachelor’s degree are favored.

  4. Can I still apply for the Fulbright Awards if I don’t have a minimum 7 GPA? No.


  5. I have taken the First Certificate / Proficiency in English exam. Can I use this to fulfill the English placement test requirement when applying for a Fulbright grant?
    No.


  6. I have taken the IELTS. Can I use this to fulfill the English placement test requirement when applying for a Fulbright grant? Yes.


  7. Do I have to take the Computer-based TOEFL before applying?
    Not necessarily. The Commission administers an institutional TOEFL exam in Buenos Aires on dates that correspond with the award program’s deadlines. For applicants from other provinces, any English placement test administered by a bi-national center will complete the requirement.

  8. Do I have to take the GRE before applying?
    No.

  9. Do I have to obtain admission to a U.S. university before applying for a grant?
    No.


  10. I have already been admitted to a university. Can I begin my studies the same year as I apply for the grant?
    No. The Fulbright Commission selects the grant candidates one year before they begin their studies.

  11. Can I apply for other scholarships/grants in addition to the Fulbright grant?
    Yes.


  12. What happens if I am selected to receive a grant, but am not admitted to a U.S. university?
    The grant will not become effective and you will have to apply again during the next application period.

  13. Can I mention a particular university’s program in my application?
    Yes, but it is not necessary.

  14. Should I include letters of recommendation in my application?
    Not in the preliminary application.

  15. Do I have to submit English translations of my diploma and transcript?
    Not in the preliminary application.

  16. I have graduated, but I have not yet received my diploma. Can I still apply for a grant?
    Yes.

  17. I have completed my entire degree except for my thesis. Can I still apply for a grant?
    No.


  18. How many candidates apply, and how many grants are offered?
    It varies from year to year.


  19. I completed my undergraduate studies in the United States. Can I still apply for a grant?
    You can still apply for a grant, but the Commission favors candidates who have had no previous experience in the United States.

  20. I am a citizen of both the United States and Argentina. Can I still apply for the Argentine grants?
    No.

  21. Does the Fulbright Commission choose the universities to which I will apply?
    No, the grant recipient chooses the universities to which he/she will apply.

  22. If I have already been admitted (with or without financial aid) to a university in the United States, can I still apply for a grant and, if I receive the grant, still attend that same university?
    Yes, as long as the university postpones your admission until the following year.

  23. I am currently pursuing postgraduate studies in the United States. Can I apply for a Fulbright grant now in order to help finance my second year of studies?
    No.


  24. Can I apply for a grant if my undergraduate degree is not from an Argentine University?
    Yes.

  25. Can I apply for other grants at the same time as I am applying for the Fulbright grant?
    Yes.


Research Grants >>Top

  1. Is there an age limit to apply for this grant program?
    No.


  2. Do I have to have a Ph.D. in order to apply for the program?
    Yes.
  3. Can I present a project on which I worked with another person?
    Yes.
  4. Do I already have to have an invitation from a university when I make my presentation?
    For research grants it is necessary to have a letter of invitation from the institution at which the research will be done.

  5. How do I obtain an invitation from a University?
    The Fulbright Commission can offer advice for this during the application period.
  6. Can the grant cover less than three months?
    No.


  7. Do the benefits include additional funding to attend conferences in the United States during the period of the grant?
    No, but during their stay in the United States the grant recipients can participate in the “Occasional Lecturer Program” which offers funding for these types of activities.

  8. Does this grant program enforce the visa J’s requirement that I return to Argentina after two years?
    Yes.
  9. I have done postgraduate studies in the United States / Europe. Do I still have to complete an English proficiency exam?
    In order to be exempt from this requirement you must present a Master’s or Doctoral diploma obtained in an English-speaking country.

  10. What restrictions are included in the visa’s expiration and in travelling within the United States?
    During the two years of the visa’s validity you may continue travelling within the United States with a different visa (J, F, tourist B1/B2, among others). However, during this period it is not possible to obtain a work visa or a permanent resident visa.

Hubert H. Humphrey Program >>Top

  1. Is there an age limit / age requirement to apply for this grant?
    The Commission prefers candidates between the ages of 35 and 45.

  2. Do I need to obtain admittance to a university?
    No.

  3. Do I need to be invited to a university?
    No.

  4. Where will I take my courses?
    Grant recipients will be assigned to universities where they can take courses that are relevant to their careers.

  5. Can I obtain a Master’s degree through this program?
    No, the Humphrey program is not meant for earning a degree.

  6. What kinds of internships are available?
    Professional internships.

  7. Can I request a specific internship?
    Yes.

  8. Can I see sample projects?
    Yes.

  9. How long does the program last?
    Approximately 10 months.

  10. Can my courses and my internship be located in different cities?
    Yes.

Teacher / Administrator Exchange >>Top

  1. How are the participating institutions selected?
    Each year, the Board of Directors of the Fulbright Commission selects the institutions that will participate in the Program.

  2. Is the invitation open to the entire country?
    No.
